ManuMind Interventional Psychiatry offers vagus nerve stimulation therapy for difficult-to-treat chronic or recurrent depression, the surgical implantation of a VNS Therapy device, SYMMETRY™, into the chest wall. The VNS device consists of a pulse generator, similar to a cardiac pacemaker but for mood, and a thin thread-like insulated wire; the device is implanted into the chest and the wire’s electrodes are connected to the left vagus nerve in the neck. When the device pulsates it sends electrical impulses from the vagus nerve to the brain. Stimulation of the vagus nerve has been shown to have bilateral effects in the brain to regulate mood disorders.

How does VNS Therapy feel?
VNS Therapy does require surgery although it is minimally invasive and generally considered manageable. When the device sends impulses, you may feel a gentle tickling or a slight pulling sensation in your throat. Some people notice a hoarse voice, mild cough or shortness of breath during stimulation. These sensations are typically not painful. The amount of stimulation can be adjusted to what feels comfortable for you — it can be turned up or down depending on how you're responding and tolerating.

One Time Implantation Procedure: typically done under general anesthesia by one of our affiliated surgeons in about 1-2 hours. Most people go home the same day.
Activation: SYMMETRY™ is activated by the interventional psychiatrist approximately 2 weeks after the implant procedure.
Treatment: 24/7, the SYMMETRY™ device is constantly active. The settings can be adjusted externally using a programming wand at our office.
Monitoring: At ManuMind we will monitor your progress overtime and adjust the stimulation parameters as needed to optimize your treatment and provide symptom relief. This will require visits to our office monthly at first and then less often thereafter.
